Basic Conversation

Basic Conversation is an immersion course, taught 100% in Spanish, that aims to practice all the basic simple and compound indicative tenses as students acquire vocabulary and gain confidence. Group activities, debates, articles, and relaxed conversation make this course an excellent way of improving your conversational skills.

Please note that, because we all learn at a different pace, 10 sessions at the Basic Conversation level may not be sufficient to reach an Intermediate Conversation level. Students should consider re-enrolling on the Basic Conversation level to further improve fluency and proficiency before considering a higher conversational level. If you need help deciding, please request an oral assessment with us (it’s free!) and we’ll give you our insight.

Please also note that our instructors tend not to review grammar rules in conversation classes, as the most important thing is to keep the conversation flowing! If you want to review specific grammar topics, it’s best to take one of our regular L1-5 classes and/or private lessons :)

Please note that, in order to register for this course, you should have scored at least 19 points on our Online Placement Test.

I really like the way this course is set up -- with plenty of opportunity to speak and introduce new subjects for vocabulary.

Basic Conversation is a great way to start your conversation journey. The class is structured to have a lot of participation and to converse with your fellow students. You read articles of current events and speak about them in Spanish - it expands your vocabulary.

Really enjoyed this class. The mix of everyday conversation, the news discussion and then the theme made the class interesting and also introduced a wide range of vocabulary.

The class moved swiftly and everyone was given an opportunity to practice their speaking skills without feeling pressured to do so.

This class was exactly what I needed. I've taken levels 2-5 at the Berges Institute but what I had originally wanted was a conversation class. The topics for conversation are different every week. Everyone is pretty much in various levels of basic conversation. I've enrolled in Basic Conversation again in order to continue with my progress.

Rolando is a great teacher and I enjoyed the course. Sometimes the topics are a little challenging (current events are a little intense right now). If we used part of the class to speak about more general topics (things we like to do, people we know, experiences we had) it would a little less intense and easier to speak since current events topics are very challenging in terms of vocabulary And I want to make sure I am using the Spanish I learned in Level 5.

The class was fantastic. I wasn’t sure what to expect, given the stay-at-home situation, but it was just as engaging and interesting as an in-person class at Berges.

The course was good! It was very small (3 people) so that took some adjusting initially but it went very well and the instructor (Edgardo) did a great job leading the class.
